Weekly News & Notes
It’s been almost five years since the Lee County Trojans have played with any significance on the football field. But that’s the situation they’ll find themselves Friday night in Leesburg, as they play host to the top-ranked team in all of Georgia High School Association Class AAAA: the Eagles from Northside (Warner Robins).
A look at the headlines from the following media outlets listed below should say all that needs to be said about this contest:

In other words, the Northside (Warner Robins)/Lee County match-up has the potential to be one of the best games in the state not only this weekend, but perhaps all season. If they can play a near-perfect game, and limit the turnovers, the Trojans might have a chance to pull off one of the biggest upsets of the 2010 season so far.
Other big games: The Northside (Warner Robins)/Lee County contest might be one of the top games statewide, but there are some other games throughout southwest Georgia that could have some playoff implications too. Here’s a brief look at those games.
Mitchell County (4-1, 2-0 Georgia High School Association Region 1-A) at Miller County (4-1, 2-0): Both teams enter this contest in a three-way with Randolph-Clay (5-0, 2-0) for first place in the region. The winner will keep at least a share of first place when the clock hits all zeroes at the end of the game, which should be very close from wire-to-wire.
Worth County (3-3, 1-1 Georgia High School Association Region 1-AAA) at Monroe (3-3, 0-2): Having lost three straight games after starting 3-0, including region losses to Cairo and Americus-Sumter, Friday’s game against the visiting Rams serves as a must-win game for the Tornadoes. A loss not only drop Monroe to 0-3 in GHSA Region 1-AAA, it also would force the Tornadoes to “win out” in their final three games of the season just to make the playoffs. As for the Rams, they hope to win their second straight game after suffering three losses since a 2-0 start.
Crisp County (2-3, 1-0) at Americus-Sumter (3-3, 2-0): Here’s a game straight out of the “who would’ve thunk it” category. Both teams come into this contest having won games at Albany’s Hugh Mills Stadium last week, with the Cougars edging Dougherty, 28-26, last Friday, while the Panthers outlasted the Tornadoes, 14-6, the following night. Additionally, the Cougars had lost three straight games prior to last week’s win, while the Panthers enter this week’s contest with back-to-back wins. It’s too bad only one team will win this contest, and stay unbeaten in region play after this week.
